Welcome graphic

The Second Chance Program, was established by The Perry County Humane Society to improve adoption rates of rescued dogs by providing adoptive families with well-trained animals using a correctional facility based training program.

The Perry County Humane Society provides dogs to the SCI/Pups prison based training program. This program then assigns a prison inmate that had passed the strict criteria to become involved in the program. The dogs in this program are allowed to stay with the inmates, creating a social environment for the animals similar to the companionship the dogs will experience in a family. This is important because dogs isolated in kennels or tied out to houses and ignored will become un-socialized in a matter of weeks.

Veterinary care is provided by volunteer vereinarians and veterinary students from the OSU Veterinary Medicine Program. A certified pet first-aid instructor provides training in first-aid. Instruction in  obedience training is provided by PCHS.

These dogs have been housebroken, received basic obedience training, and may have a few tricks up their furry little sleeves.
